Embrace Urban Photography – ‘AroundUMatters’

                   

Three month community digital photography project, started May 2011

Embrace Social Enterprises Ltd has recieved £9875 from Big Lottery Awards for All grant funding. This funding will be used to run a three-month photography project. Facilitating 15 free photography workshops, a project blog and culminating in an exhibition in the boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark in South London.

We will deliver experiential and interactive workshops to give young people a practical understanding of photographic techniques in order to express their inner core values and experiment with their concepts. Photography will be a tool to give them an opportunity to express values creatively.

The photography workshops teach participants basic photography skills using digital cameras and how to express oneself through images creatively and imaginatively. The workshops will be run by experienced  Embrace Photography Tutors and will be fun, hands-on activities exploring nature, black & white, patterns, portraits, landscapes.

There are 5 sessions open to the public and 10 dedicated sessions for marginalized young people where we use photography as means to exploring the young people’s life in search for things they deem positive and valuable. The 10 digital photography workshops for young people will be run for groups of students from local schools with the help of Communities Empowerment Network (CEN) staff.

The photography-editing workshops (2 groups of 4/ one for adults and one for youngsters) will be at the Embrace base.  Sessions will teach basic digital photo editing techniques using popular software such as Adobe Photoshop & others.

The project will finish will a photography exhibition and workshop on Streatham Common as part of the Streatham Festival Big Day Out 2011.

Free One Day Photography Workshop

Natural Lighting Effects

This is a five hour workshop free of cost (normally £45) intended for medium level photographers and therefore you will need to have a general understanding of aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Please note that this course is not suitable for strictly beginners. We will explore:

  • Portraiture & Lighting

o       Natural lighting effects with demonstrations

o       Practical application of theory in the studio (also outdoors weather permitting)

o       Choice of lenses and equipment

o       Positioning of model

  • Review and discussion of images

There will be an opportunity to learn how to use built-in flash and flash units as well as polarising filters so if you own this type of equipment please bring it with you as we cannot provided it; this is not essential to attend the course.

Please note before reserving your place on this course that there will not be a full hour lunch as part of this workshop; instead two 30 min breaks will take place. This is in order to maximise the quality of light at midday so if you have any special requirements please let us know at the time of your booking.

Claire Weir is an Irish/Australian Photographer who hold a BA in Photography. Shortlisted for the 2005 Fujifilm Student Photographer of the Year, 2007 Student Photographer of the Year in the 3G Student Media Awards and Nominated for the 2008 Nikon Academy Photographic Student of the Year.

Claires motivations in her own photographic practice rely on documenting the every day and the extraordinary in the ordinary, striving to produce images that question and evoke reaction. Commercially Claire is involved in Film & Tv, Music and Editorial projects commissioned by clients such as Amnesty International, FrontLineDefenders, Channel4, RTÉ, State.ie and many others.

Further Information and Requirements

  • This is a free workshop led by professional photography tutors.
  • You must have a basic level of photography including knowledge of aperture, shutter speed and ISO. This workshop is not suitable for beginners
  • You are also required to bring your own SLR (ideally a DSLR with either built-in flash or a separate unit although this is not essential)
  • This is a practical workshop where all the theory will be put into practice in the studio and outside the studio weather permitting.
  • The number of participants on this course is limited so if you want to secure your place please book as soon as possible as these courses are very popular and get booked up very quickly. For more information please contact us.

Streatham’s Urban Bloom

11am to 3pm Saturday 21st May


A free digital photography walk around Streatham organised and ran by Embrace Social Enterprises Ltd.

This walk is for beginners and medium level experienced photographers. The walk will consist of walk around Streatham Common and the streets of Streatham.

Start at Streatham Common café and finish at Dunraven School.  Run by an experienced Embrace photography tutor who will provide photography tips along the way.

Please bring your own digital camera and refreshments.

The walk is suitable for any type of camera including camera phones.

Please wear suitable clothing & footwear for an outdoor environment.

It is the participant’s responsibility to look after any equipment they bring on the walk.

 Embrace cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage to personal equipment while participating on this walk.

A responsible adult should accompany any children under 16 years old.

Ben McInally has ten years experience in freelance photography, covering all disciplines from weddings and music through to portraiture and still life.

Over the past 2 years Ben has been working with Embrace, documenting the conservation work being done in Dulwich upper wood by volunteers. The last year and half Ben has been running photography workshops on the behalf of Embrace, these have covered a variety of subject areas and skill sets.

Over the next few years Ben wants to encourage more people to enjoy photography beyond the simple snapshot by getting people to look beyond what is see as a normal picture and venturing into a more artistic direction.

How to make great photographs

10:15am to 4:30pm Saturday 11th June at Embrace office, Brixton

This is a free workshop but we are asking for people wishing to attend to pay a £10 returnable (if you attend) deposit
The course is aimed at people who know how to use their cameras, but are unsure of how to compose a shot or just don’t think about it.
The outline structure is:
A brief introduction to
Identifying your subject
Positioning yourself
Landscape or portrait?
Rule of thirds
At this point, we’d go out and take pictures
Back to the office to review some of the pictures
Lunch
A brief introduction to
The colour wheel
Lines, shapes and patterns
Negative space
Final review, feedback and group discussion
Photography Tutor:

Ingrid Abraham is an avid photographer whose main priorities are quality and creativity. She has taken photographs informally for many years.  Her  specialisms are portraits and weddings and has also taken landscapes in the past.

She does all her own post-processing and use techniques in a subtle way to give my pictures a specific feel. She has learned the technicalities of infrared, colour and black and white photography. Her pictures are unique because the people she photograph are unique. She doesn’t want to simply reproduce what everyone else is doing so she is trying to develop her own style.

How to use Adobe Photoshop photo editing software

Adode Photoshop photo editing software

10am to 4pm Saturday 25th June 2011

This is a free workshop but we are asking for people wishing to attend to pay a £10 returnable (if you attend) deposit

Participants on this workshop will learn how to give your digital photos that extra edge using photo editing software and how to correct mistakes.

This workshop training session is limited to 5 people and will cover how to edit photos using Adobe Photoshop software.

It would be helpful if participants could bring their own laptop with Adobe Photoshop software but this is not essential.

Free Photography Workshop on Streatham Common
2pm to 5pm Saturday 2nd July 2011

This photography workshop is aimed at beginners looking at simple photography tips in the setting of Streatham Common in Lambeth, London.

The workshop is part Embrace Social Enterprise Embrace Urban Photography project funded by Awards For All Big Lottery.

This event is taking place as part of Streatham Festival Big Day Out.

The workshop will focus on nature photography and Streatham Festival but will also look at other subjects. The photography training will cover basic camera settings and will look at composition tips for taking better nature photos and photos in general.

The training will help to give participants the skills and confidence to go beyond the auto mode of their digital camera. The workshop is will have a limited number of participants.

Participants will need their own camera and will need to register on the day.
